Art-Itudes Center

In a recent contest for youth in the South Dade area we asked them to tell us their plan to bring peace to the community. Overwhelmingly, they described domestic abuse that informed community violence. In response to this cry for help, Elijah Network plans to develop a performing arts center here with a collaboration of preventionists, artists, schools and churches called: Art-Itudes. Our first play will be "Where the Angry Things Are," giving a voice to the domestic abuse that gives rise to destructive behavior.
Based on the M. Sendak classic "Where the Wild Things Are," we hope to achieve the same catharsis and self-expression achieved by Max, the book's protagonist, but on a community wide level. Community members and youth would be involved not just as actors in the play, but as writers, directors, costume and set designers, promoters etc.; teaching and learning skills to put on artistic productions of their own. At the same time, mental health professionals and others from the helping professions would guide families and youth.
Just like people, communities have anger and frustration, and they need a place to put that energy. "Where the Angry Things Are" will give neighborhoods the chance to move towards healing and prevent violence.

"Turning the Hearts of Families through a United Community"

Dear Friends,

My passion, as a parent with three children of my own, had always been protecting children by strengthening the promise of a loving and caring family. When I read the prophecy in Malachi 4: 5-6: "In the last days says the Lord I will send Elijah the prophet and he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers. Lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." Not wanting to be smitten with a curse, I began to study that verse in depth. What I learned was life-changing for me. The phrase "turn the hearts" was actually a call to retreat that the Hebrews used when they were losing a battle. I began to understand that prophecy as a metaphor that described families losing the battle and running toward each other.

I began to share this new understanding with many different people and Elijah Network Family and Community Alliance was born. In the last ten years we have touched the lives of hundreds of families and prevented destructive behaviors like domestic and public violence, crime, substance abuse and teen pregnancy.

We work in families directly but we also believe that a strong unified community is also vital for the well being and protection of children. We partner with businesses, government and community organizations, churches and schools to assist in any we can.

Please explore our web site to see the many programs and possibilities that Elijah Network provides.

Blessings,
